Any visit to Jesse Hall during roughly the past half-century was also a jaunt through an art gallery. Lawrence Beall Smith’s Peanut Stand at the State Fair, Sedalia hung near Jesse Auditorium’s box office. Throughout the building, the walls were animated with paintings from the Scruggs-Vandervoort-Barney collection, which chronicles Missouri’s rural and urban life, landscapes, and traditions. The collection, named for the St. Louis department store owners who commissioned the works in 1946 and 1947, came to MU in 1950 and passed to the university’s Museum of Art and Archaeology in 2014. A selection from the 98 items is on display through Oct. 27 in the museum at 115 Business Loop 70 West in Columbia. Admission is free. Or, view the works online at maa.missouri.edu.
