Columbia, Mo. — Applications are now open for the Pat Tillman scholarship, and the University of Missouri is offering three information sessions for eligible military service members, veterans and their current spouses interested in applying.
The sessions will include information about the scholarship, its application process and helpful suggestions on how to develop an application essay. Applicants must be full-time students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at any public or private U.S.-based, accredited institution.
Robert Ross, director of the MU Student Veterans Resource & Support Center, said the sessions are a great opportunity for student veterans interested in applying.
“Attending an information session better equips applicants with knowledge needed to write competitive essays, which is the heart of the application process,” Ross said. “The MU Student Veterans Resource & Support Center is partnering with the MU Fellowships Office, which can assist students with transferring their visions into 400-word essays — which could make the difference between an average application and one that gets noticed.”
The UM System is among 15 university partners of the Pat Tillman Foundation. So far, there have been two Tillman Scholars from MU.
The application deadline is Feb. 29.
Each year the Pat Tillman Foundation chooses 60 Tillman Scholars, who are awarded $11,000 in annual funding for academics. This funding includes tuition, books and living expenses.
The foundation, which focuses on opportunities to advance scholars’ leadership development, provides access to a worldwide community of mentors, scholars and industry leaders.
Tillman Scholars are chosen based on attributes of service, scholarship, humble leadership and impact. The foundation acknowledges that while the selection process is ambitious, those who become Tillman Scholars are accredited by the organization as outstanding students.
“The Tillman Scholar selection process is rigorous, and the result is a remarkable cohort of people with an immense potential for impact,” says Dan Futrell, CEO of the Pat Tillman Foundation and 2011 Tillman Scholar. “We are proud to invest in and empower these remarkable individuals as they continue in their pursuit of academic and service-minded leadership and excellence.”
The times and dates of the information sessions are:
- 11 a.m. – noon Friday, Feb. 7, at MU Student Center, Room 2204.
- Noon – 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13 at Memorial Union, Room S302.
- Noon – 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Memorial Union, Room S302.
